ADVICE FOR SAFE EXPOSURE
To obtain a healthy safe tan and prevent burning or more serious long-term skin damage we suggest you take the following precautions:
1. Use a protective cream with the right protection factor especially on the parts of the body that are exposed to the sun.
2. Limit your exposure time when the UV index is at its strongest (around midday) or stay in the shade as much as possible. Fifty percent of UVB rays strike the Earth between 11.00am and 3.00pm.
3. As the sun's rays also reach the retinas, protect your eyes with sunglasses with UV absorbing lenses: These will reduce damage to the eyes and the area around the eyes that is extremely sensitive to UV light.
4. Drink lots to avoid dehydration.
5. Avoid the use of perfumes and deodorants that can cause increased sensitivity to light.
6. When you are in the water, you are still exposed to UV. Ninety-five percent of UV rays penetrate the water so make sure that you are well protected with water-resistant sun products.
7. When choosing which SPF to use, you are advised to start with a high protection factor for your first exposure then gradually use lower factor applications.
8. As UV light passes through clouds, you must still protect your skin even when it is cloudy and not particularly hot. The effects of UV light increase with altitude.
9. Even under a sun umbrella, more than 50% of UV radiation still gets through.
10. Remember that self-tanning products do NOT offer protection from UV.
